Beginning in 2014, I started an original editorial column as part of The Cornell Daily Sun named the 'Cornell Close-Ups', highlighting the notable faculty and staff of Cornell University. The coverage of this project ranges from featuring the University's President to Nobel Prize winning professors, and even the man behind Cornell's notorious ice cream.




President David Skorton
President of Cornell University (2007-2015)
Before President David Skorton leaves Cornell to head the Smithsonian Institution, one may see him practicing tai chi or tae kwon do, showcasing his talents as a jazz musician, beekeeping or reading police mystery novels whenever he isn’t running the University.

Dr. Roald Hoffmann
Organic Chemistry Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University
A writer, Holocaust survivor and a Nobel Prize winner in theoretical chemistry, Roald Hoffmann, the Frank H. T. Rhodes professor of humane letters, emeritus, said his journey to Cornell began on the other side of the globe.
Hoffmann — the son of a family of Holocaust survivors — said he spent a year of his childhood hiding with his family from the Nazi occupation in a small Ukrainian village and that the Holocaust has had a lasting impact on his life.

Professor Cheryl Stanely
Introduction to Wines, Hotel Administration
Prof. Cheryl Stanley ’00, food and beverage management, teaches one of the most popular courses at Cornell: Hotel Administration 4300: Introduction to Wines. Open to all students aged 18 and over from all majors across the University, Stanley spends each semester sharing her extensive knowledge and passion for wine.
Having interned for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts the summer before her senior year of college, Stanley said she worked there after graduating from Cornell and began by pairing nightly wine selections with the specials on the menu.

Professor Isaac Kramnick
Government at Cornell University
After 50 years of teaching — 43 of which were at Cornell — Prof. Isaac Kramnick, government, will retire after this semester, following the sesquicentennial celebrations. During his time at Cornell, Kramnick has been a teacher, advisor and eventually became the first vice provost for undergraduate education.

Professor Tom Ruttledge
Organic Chemistry at Cornell University
A world traveler who has visited 73 countries, Ruttledge grew up in a Detroit suburb, which he said lacked diveristy. He added that he would experience something new when he later matriculated at Wayne State University, a school that he said is very ethnically diverse.
“It kind of opened my eyes that there was a different world out there,” Ruttledge said.
